The Liga Pilipinas is a new basketball league in the Philippines in search for fresh and talented basketball players all over the Philippines. It will start on May 23, 2008 in three key cities of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The league is made up of 16 teams representing North and South of the Philippines. It will have 2 conferences that will last for four months each per season. Representing the North are Luzon teams Ilocos Sur, Baguio, Pampanga, Taguig, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna and Rizal. Comprising the South are Cebu, Mandaue, Bacolod and Iloilo (Visayas) and Misamis Oriental, Zamboanga, Davao and Ozamis (Mindanao). This league was conceptualized by former PBA Commissioner and moving force of Third Force promotions Noli Eala. The system is almost the same as with NBA wherein each team will have their own homecourt and they get to travel to different provinces to compete. It's almost the same with the MBA (Metropolitan Basketball Association) System. “There’s still a lot of talent in the regions,” Eala said in Tuesday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue. He also said that among the 14 players in each team, 8 of them must be a 100% homegrown in that team's province and 2 ex-Pro and 1 filipino-foreigner. Eala pointed out that Liga Pilipinas does not intend to compete with PBA just as the Metropolitan Basketball Association did which started in 1998 to its end in 2002. Will it be like the MBA (Metropolitan Basketball Association)? I heard that MBA just disappeared and didn't get enough sponsors to continue the league.

I'm sure there is a liga basketball website but I think it's not yet live. If you can't inquire online, the best way to get in touch with them is to contact Noli Eala or the office of Liga Pilipinas. I'll ask my friend from the Phils.
